I was born and raised in Philadelphia and bought my first camera at 11 years old. I saved for months doing chores and yardwork for people around the neighborhood.
I carried the passion with me through high school in Philly and my college days in New York City, where I was inspired by Humans of New York photographer Brandon Stanton to pursue portraits. I was struck by the power a portrait had in telling a person's story and, in the spirit of my Quaker education, illuminating the good in every individual.
After college and a series of national and international travels, I returned to my home city of Philadelphia determined to make a name for myself as a photographer and content creator. Drawing on my family history and roots in Philly's cultural center, South Street, I started my Instagram page @southstreetsam with a singular mission: portraits on the street every single day for a year straight, no days off. The feat received significant coverage in local news media and online press, paving the way for the page's viral success. During that year I took over 100,000 portraits, a number that has steadily increased to more than 150,000.
Since 2023, the platform has also grown beyond my wildest imagination: over 2 million followers and 600 million views across all platforms. South Street Sam has become a trusted name for content, whether it's showing the beauty of everyday people and families or checking in with A-list celebrities when they're in town. Some names include Kevin Hart, LeBron James, Will Smith, French Montana, IShowSpeed, 50 Cent, Allen Iverson, Mark Wahlberg, Ashanti, The Dogist, Keyshia Cole, and many more.
This is only the beginning. I've started traveling again with plans to grow my platform around the country and the world. As I told a rapper once: "You're right here in front of me, you gotta know my name. I'm South Street Sam. Remember the name, bro."
